“People are speeding and not listening,” said Moeti Mmusi, spokesperson for the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety. According to SABC News, it was reckless driving, high speeds, and dangerous overtaking that led to the crashes. Law enforcement officers are now under pressure to step up when the next peak season comes.
The Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety confirmed that several taxis and private vehicles were involved. This revelation has raised concerns over public transport safety during peak seasons.
Families torn apart by Easter crashes
Unfortunately, in many of these accidents, multiple members of the same family died in the same crash. Paramedics say victims were either pronounced dead on the scene or died on their way to the hospital. Local communities are mourning. It is alleged that some accuse the authorities of failing to be strict and arresting repeat traffic offenders.
