Kaizer Chiefs sweat over star ahead of Nedbank Cup showdown

Kaizer Chiefs sweat over star ahead of Nedbank Cup showdown.

Chiefs are holding their breath as they await critical news on the fitness of key defender Inacio Miguel, who limped off during their 1-1 draw with TS Galaxy in the Betway Premiership. With a massive semi-final clash against Mamelodi Sundowns looming this Sunday, Miguel’s condition could prove pivotal.

Miguel injury rocks Chiefs’ preparation

Miguel has been a rock at the heart of the Amakhosi defense, racking up 26 starts across all competitions this season. However, he left the field in the second half against Galaxy, just moments before the hosts struck an equalizer.

The timing couldn’t be worse. Chiefs are hungry to end a ten-year trophy drought, and Miguel’s leadership and consistency have been instrumental in their campaign. With Rushwin Dortley already ruled out for the season, losing Miguel would deal a serious blow to the squad’s defensive depth.

While fans feared the worst after watching Miguel exit the pitch, early signs suggest the injury might be a cramp rather than something more serious. Still, the medical team plans to monitor him closely throughout the week to assess whether he’ll be fit for Sunday’s blockbuster semifinal.

“His presence is massive for us, especially against a team like Sundowns,” said an internal source at the club. “We’re hoping it’s nothing major.”

Chiefs defensive options if he misses out

If Miguel fails to recover in time, coach Nasreddine Nabi has a few tactical cards to play. Edmilson Dove could slot into the left centre-back position, allowing Bradley Cross to start at left back. Alternatively, Dove could shift to left back, with Zitha Kwinika pairing Msimango at centre-back.

Kwinika and Msimango have shown promising chemistry when paired together, but replacing Miguel’s experience would still be a big ask.

Amid the injury worries, Chiefs welcomed a double boost. Tashreeq Morris returned to action as a substitute against Galaxy, offering fresh attacking depth. Wandile Duba also made his comeback and celebrated it in style, scoring in his first start since returning from injury.

These returns come at a critical time, as Chiefs aim to unleash their strongest possible squad against a dominant Sundowns side.

Thabo Cele in a race against time

Another name on the injury list is Thabo Cele, who missed the Galaxy fixture after picking up a knock in their recent 2-1 defeat to Golden Arrows. The club remains hopeful that Cele will recover in time for the weekend, with his presence in midfield seen as vital to balance the team.
