Orlando Pirates win R23.3 million

Orlando Pirates are feeling supreme after qualifying for the CAF Champions League semifinals, and it’s not just all about pride and prestige.

ORLANDO PIRATES IN THE CAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE SEMIFINALS

Following a 1-0 win away over MC Alger in the first-leg quarterfinal battle last week, the Sea Robbers were held to a 0-0 draw in Soweto on Wednesday night. The result was enough for Orlando Pirates to seal a two-legged semifinal clash against Egypt’s new rich kids on the block: Pyramids FC.

Financially, qualification for the CAF Champions League semifinals comes with a prize money of USD 1,200,000 (R23.3 million).

Meanwhile, Mamelodi Sundowns, who beat Tunisia’s Esperance 1-0 on aggregate, will face Al Ahly in the other semifinal battle. Should Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns win their semifinal matches, we will witness the first all-South African final. The Buccaneers became the first-ever Mzansi club to win the tournament in 1995 before Sundowns took the honour in 2016.

In the meantime, Orlando Pirates will host Marumo Gallants in the Nedbank Cup semifinals on Sunday, while Sundowns will host Kaizer Chiefs in the other semifinal.
