Kaizer Chiefs, desperate for additional firepower, are weighing up their options for the offseason: Pyramids pair Fiston Mayele and Fagrie Lakay.
Both come with international pedigree, but it’s the former that AmaKhosi are prioritising. Lakay, currently on loan to Cleopatra FC, will serve as a contingency option if Mayele negotiations fall through
According to a SoccerLaduma source, “It is expected to go down to the wire as they are interested in two strikers of the same team.
South African soccer fans will be well versed with Lakay’s game, a Bafana international whose seven-year PSL spell saw him playing at SuperSport United, Ajax Cape Town and Cape Town City.
Meanwhile, Kaizer Chiefs long-term target Mayele has become one of the deadliest strikers in North Africa, scoring six in nine Champions League games this season.
Interest confirmed
“At the moment there is not one striker who the club could say is the one joining them. Yes, they are priotising Fiston Mayele but they don’t want to be caught off guard if things don’t work out with him and that’s why they are reigniting the interest in [Fagrie] Lakay,” SoccerLaduma stated.
“You remember they have been interested in him for some time now? They are just waiting for that chance to sign him. And this could be the right time to do so for the club.”
A second source reaffirmed Kaizer Chiefs’ interest, saying, “It could go down to choice and priority for both Chiefs and Pyramids. Which striker could Pyramids let go and which one do they really want to keep? As for Chiefs, which player do they really want to sign over the other?
“So, it will also be about the pricing from Pyramids and what Chiefs can afford to pay for them to get the striker they desire for next season. That’s the decision they will have to make.”
