Orlando Pirates news: Saleng, Mbekezeli, Mofokeng, Mosimane

Quadruple chasers Orlando Pirates weathered the MC Alger storm to claim their spot in the Champions League semi-finals.

Next up? Egyptian giants Pyramids FC, headed by Kaizer Chiefs target Fiston Mayele. The Congolese striker bagged a much-needed brace during their latest run-in with Moroccan giants AS FAR and will be hoping to inflict similar damage when he lines up in Soweto next week (April 18).

Rumours within the club

  • Monnapule Saleng, spotted in practice for the first time in four months, is yet to make a matchday squad this year. The jury is still out as to whether he will feature before the end of the season.
  • In-form defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi has been selected for Bafana’s under-20’s upcoming tournament and could miss Orlando Pirates last three of four PSL encounters.
  • Upcoming opponents Pyramids FC had an R25.8 million bid rejected for Relebohile Mofokeng in January.
  • Orlando Pirates have reportedly listed former Mamelodi Sundowns boss Pitso Mosimane as their priority replacement for Jose Riveiro.

 Mosimane rumours confirmed

“There are a few coaches to be considered for different reasons, but apparently it’s believed that Pitso [Mosimane] is their preferred candidate,” a source stated.

“It’s believed that he is their first priority at the moment. That’s what the team wants as things stand. Even if they have not spoken to him (behind the scenes) yet, he is their first priority.

“They are saying if they (Pirates) managed to work with Jose Riveiro for three years, then why can’t they go for a coach like Pitso? So, they know what they are looking for, and they know quality doesn’t come cheap,” the source added.

“But as you know, although he is their first priority, he is not the only one they are looking at. As I said, there are different factors they are looking at.”
