Mamelodi Sundowns Nedbank Cup exit: What went wrong?

Mamelodi Sundowns’ 2-1 loss to Kaizer Chiefs in the Nedbank Cup semi-finals raised questions from analysts and fans.

Are there performance-related issues that could have contributed to them losing out on a spot in the final?

Sundowns coaching decisions under scrutiny

Post-match, Masandawana head coach Miguel Cardoso expressed how frustrated he was over the absence of VAR in the PSL, particularly in relation to the semi-final.

“When you work in a country that doesn’t have VAR, that’s what happens,” he said.

However, beyond the lack of VAR, which might have contributed to a loss, fans and commentators questioned the tactical decisions made during the match.

The substitutions, especially the early withdrawal of attacking players like Iqraam Rayners and Bathusi Aubaas, drew surprise in particular.

Their replacements, Arthur Sales and Jayden Adams, struggled to stamp their authority on the match and have any meaningful impact, according to fans.

Posting on X, formerly Twitter, under the hashtag #NedbankCup, fans shared some strong opinions.

Here’s what a few users had to say:

@Thabo_M19: “I blame Miguel Cardoso. We were doomed for loss because of him, how can you sub Bathusi ”
@LeratoK_Sport: “They shouldn’t have put Lucas in today because he really cost us.”
@Kamo_PitchTalk: “Arthur and Jayden Adams were just not focused today, really disappointing.”
@Zee_Mdlongwa: “I’m shocked because these players play really well and then all of a sudden this is what happens. I did not expect this.”
@Bongz_TrueFan: “This was a wake-up call. Sundowns need to fix things fast before the next CAF clash.”

Player performances: Defensive missteps and missed opportunities

Lucas Suarez did not impress fans when he gifted Kaizer Chiefs an equaliser.

In an after-match interview, Wandile Duba admitted that they saw Lucas as a weakness.

“Coach Nabi said we should make a trap and close him down in a way that will force him to make an inward pass like he did.

“Yes [the coach said we should target Suarez]. Since the start of the week, he said our target is the left centre-back.”

Supporters also claimed that they picked up that the team lacked focus and sharpness which are elements that usually define Mamelodi Sundowns’ performances.

Their failure to control the midfield and apply constant pressure on Kaizer Chiefs made them vulnerable, especially in the second half.

What’s next for Mamelodi Sundowns?

With the Nedbank Cup title now out of reach, Mamelodi Sundowns will now prepare for a critical CAF Champions League semi-final against Egyptian giants Al Ahly.

Mamelodi Sundowns will host the first leg tie on Saturday, 19 April.

Kick-off is at 15:00.

Was this a once-off tactical flop or are Sundowns starting to crack under pressure?
