SASSA delayed payment explained, as we alert you on why grants for May come later than usual.
May 2025 brings an unusual challenge for South Africa’s elderly relying on the SASSA Older Person Grants. Thanks to a rare calendar alignment, grant payments will be delayed, arriving a full week later than expected. Instead of the usual early-month disbursement, payments will only begin on Tuesday, 6 May 2025.
This means recipients must stretch their April grants over five weeks—a tough ask in today’s economic climate.
“Many who receive May 2025 SASSA Older Person Grants don’t just support themselves, but multiple family members with their modest stipend.”
Adding to the pressure, the delayed date follows three back-to-back long weekends—including Easter (18–21 April), Freedom Day (28 April), and Worker’s Day (1 May). These disruptions can make everyday tasks like shopping, transport, and banking harder for beneficiaries.
Inflation bites: Why the R130 grant increase may not be enough
In April 2025, SASSA increased the Older Person Grant by R130 to help cushion recipients against the cost of living. Those aged 60 to 74 now receive R2 310, and those 75 and older get R2 330. But this bump may already feel hollow.
That’s because a new VAT hike, effective next month, threatens to cancel out the real-world value of this increase.
“April 2025 SASSA grant increases were commensurate with the rapidly rising cost of living, even if the R130 increase will be eroded away by the approved VAT increase from next month.”
Application process: What you need to apply for the older person grant
New to the SASSA Older Person Grant system? You’ll need to apply in person at a local SASSA office — online applications are not available. However, you can book your appointment online via the SASSA services portal.
Make sure you bring these documents with you:
Barcoded ID (smart card or green booklet)
Proof of residence (utility bill)
Marital status documentation
Proof of income/dividends
Details of personal assets and property
Bank-stamped statements (last 3 months)
UIF documentation or discharge certificate
Private pension declaration (if applicable)
Copy of your will or estate documents (if applicable)
If you’re too frail or sick to apply, a trusted person may apply on your behalf with a doctor’s letter. All documents must be certified at a police station.
Know the limits: Means and asset testing for eligibility
To receive the May 2025 SASSA Older Person Grant, you must meet income and asset criteria. These ensure that only the financially vulnerable get support.
Here are the current thresholds:
Single applicants:
Income must be below R8 070/month
Assets must not exceed R1 372 800
Married applicants:
Combined income must be under R16 140/month
Assets must not exceed R2 745 600
If your savings, private pension, or property exceed these limits, your application will likely be declined.
Timeline tips: How long does approval take?
SASSA warns that application processing can take up to 3 months. If approved, your payments will be backdated to your application date, so you won’t lose out.
Should your application be denied, you have 90 days to lodge an appeal through the Department of Social Development (DSD).
