Johannesburg will experience a water supply issue in May which is set to leave many residents without water for up to two weeks. The disruption will be due to maintenance work on key infrastructure. The City of Johannesburg is warning residents to prepare themselves for the upcoming inconvenience.
Water supply crisis looming over Johannesburg in May
“We urge residents to use water sparingly and to store enough water for their daily needs during the maintenance period,” said a spokesperson from the City of Johannesburg’s Department of Water and Sanitation. SABC News reported that officials have confirmed that the disruptions are necessary because of the upgrades due to Johannesburg’s water distribution system. Due to the nature of the work, it is expected to cause widespread water shortages but they have also shared that officials are working on measures to provide emergency water supplies to the areas that will be affected.
Implementing emergency plans
The city is already implementing emergency plans to help when the time comes and that includes tanker trucks stationed in high-demand areas. The city also urged citizens to start practicing water conservation efforts now so it can be easier to manage the shortage while maintenance continues.
