Riveiro replacement: Orlando Pirates’ coaching saga takes a twist

Orlando Pirates are presumably weeks away from announcing their next head coach following the announcement of Jose Riveiro’s departure.

The club will want to hire before the offseason to allow Riveiro’s successor ample time to adjust to the Soweto giants and vice-versa. Additionally, it will enable both to align on transfer targets that enrich the upcoming coach’s playing style.

Failure to do both could be catastrophic to Orlando Pirates’ resurgence – no one likes to be hurried, so why not allow as much time as possible?

New favourite emerges

Former Mamelodi Sundowns boss Pitso Mosimane became heavily linked to the job after Riveiro’s decision was made public, but according to reports, Orlando Pirates’ priority is with Rulani Mokwena.

Orlando Pirates secure Mako

The Buccaneers have pencilled in two more years with left-back Paseko Mako, keeping him at the club until 2027.

“For now, he [Mako] is the only left back who can be there next season as the future of captain Innocent Maela hangs in the balance. So that is why they have decided to keep him for a further two seasons.” a source revealed.

Meanwhile, Championship side Sunderland are monitoring Orlando Pirates pair Tshegofatso Mabasa and Thalente Mbatha:

“It’s the same club [Sunderland] interested in another Pirates player, Thalente Mbatha. It’s believed that when the scouts came to look at Mbatha they were also happy with Mabasa, and they had to assess him further in other games and apparently they were happy and they have enquired about him. So, Sunderland are the club interested in Tshegofatso Mabasa,” Soccer Laduma revealed.

Who should Orlando Pirates sign this offseason?
