Unknown gunmen shot and killed a man with alleged gang ties in Gqeberha during a suspected drive-by on the R75 on Tuesday afternoon, 22 April 2025.
GANG BOSS SHOT DEAD
The 40-year-old Peter Baaitjies, an alleged gang boss, was travelling in his SUV in the direction of Kwadwesi. It is believed that the vehicle pulled up next to him and shot Baaitjies.
According to a media statement, SAPS spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg, at around 14:00, suspects opened fire at close range while both cars were in motion near the intersection of the R75 and Chelsea Road.
Baatjies lost control of his vehicle and collided with a stationary truck. He died on the scene from multiple gunshot wounds.

Janse Van Rensburg also confirmed that detectives from SAPS Kwadwesi are investigating the murder. The motive remains unclear, and police have yet to make any arrests.
Although Baatjies was allegedly linked to gang activity in the city, police have not formally connected his murder to any ongoing gang conflict.
