Orlando Pirates boss Jose Riveiro has become a hot commodity on the African football scene, with Egyptian giants Zamalek SC making a bold move to secure his services. But the Spaniard isn’t planning to leave the Soweto club just yet.
According to top Egyptian publication Almasryalyoum, Zamalek president Hussein Labib has already initiated contact with Riveiro’s camp. The club is reportedly eager to appoint the 48-year-old as their new head coach ahead of the 2025/26 season.
This development comes as Zamalek prepares for the departure of Jose Peseiro, who is expected to leave the club at the end of the current campaign.
Pirates coach asked to be left alone for now
Riveiro has responded with a measured request for patience.
“He has asked the club to wait until his current commitments with Pirates have been fulfilled,” sources told Almasryalyoum.
And it’s easy to see why.
The Spaniard is currently navigating one of the most intense phases of the season with Orlando Pirates still in the hunt for three major trophies. The Buccaneers are preparing for the decisive CAF Champions League semi-final second leg against Pyramids FC in Cairo. On top of that, they’ve booked a spot in the Nedbank Cup final and remain strong contenders in the Betway Premiership title race.
Zamalek want a done deal before season ends
Reports suggest Zamalek is keen to wrap up negotiations before the end of the current campaign. Their goal is to make an announcement early and give the club a fresh start heading into next season.
But with Riveiro laser-focused on his current project at Pirates, any deal will likely have to wait.
Coach in demand across the continent
Riveiro’s rise has been meteoric since joining the Soweto giants. His tactical discipline, attacking philosophy, and calm leadership have earned him praise both locally and abroad. Now, one of North Africa’s biggest clubs wants him, a testament to the impact he’s made in South African football.
For now, Orlando Pirates fans can breathe a little easier. Their coach is committed to chasing glory before even considering his next move.
Stay tuned with The South African as Orlando Pirates boss Jose Riveiro in contact with a potential new club.
