Learners across South Africa are getting ready for an extended break, with the special holiday week starting tomorrow. Meanwhile, the Department of Basic Education (DBE) confirmed that the June holidays in 2025 will begin on 28 June, following the end of the second term on 27 June.
Term dates for 2025 school year
The school year is divided into four terms: 15 January to 28 March (Term 1), 8 April to 27 June (Term 2), 22 July to 3 October (Term 3), and 13 October to 10 December (Term 4).
In addition to the regular school breaks, learners and teachers will enjoy a special break this week, with three extra holidays added to the calendar.
Special April break begins
The DBE designates 29 April, 30 April, and 2 May as special school holidays, creating a week off combined with public holidays. Freedom Day falls on Sunday and is observed tomorrow, 28 April, and Workers’ Day follows on 1 May.
DBE spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga, during an interview with CapeTalk, explained that April poses scheduling challenges.
“These holidays are congested in a particular week, with one coming after the other, making it impossible for schools to remain open for an extended period,” said Mhlanga.
Why the Calendar Shift Happens
The DBE works closely with stakeholders such as the Department of Transport, religious groups, NGOs, and the private sector to finalise school calendars. Additionally, Mhlanga highlighted that the high number of religious events and public holidays in April impacts schooling.
As schools close their doors for the special break tomorrow, families and educators welcome the chance to rest and plan ahead for 2025.
