Orlando Pirates plot to hijack Kaizer Chiefs’ striker target for next season.
The Bucs are ready to beat arch-rivals Amakhosi to the signature of Richards Bay striker Yanela Mbuthuma, a source has confirmed.
The 23-year-old forward has become one of the hottest prospects in the PSL after a steady season with Richards Bay. Now, with both Soweto giants circling, Mbuthuma’s future could be decided in a matter of days.
Pirates take initiative with Mbuthuma bid
According to a well-placed source, Pirates have already taken the lead in negotiations and are preparing an official offer to secure the striker’s services.
“There are several players that the club is looking at for next season but the first priority is the striking department and it’s believed that they have identified Richards Bay United’s Yanela Mbuthuma and the club is set to table an offer for him,” a source said.
This move comes at a time when Kaizer Chiefs have also shown keen interest in the player, sparking a potential tug-of-war for the young attacker.
Chiefs also in the picture but Pirates want it more
Mbuthuma has already attracted attention from Amakhosi scouts, but the Buccaneers are reportedly willing to push harder and faster to secure the deal.
“At the moment I am not sure of how much they are offering. But they are willing to sign him and that’s why they are tableing that offer. But you know Chiefs are also apparently interested in the same player. And that’s why Pirates are ready to table the offer and have an advantage over their rivals,” the source added.
With both clubs rebuilding for the upcoming season, the pressure is on to secure quality talent early. And Pirates appear determined to take the initiative.
More forward reinforcements incoming
Mbuthuma is not the only forward on Pirates’ radar. Reports suggest that the Buccaneers are targeting additional attacking options as they gear up for a demanding season filled with domestic and continental fixtures.
“They are looking at different strikers. They want to boost the striking force as they will be playing in many different competitions next season. And that’s why they are set to table the offer for Mbuthuma and sign other strikers as well. He is not the only striker they are targeting as there is one from Kruger United. And another one from Zambia as well.”
The Richards Bay attacker has made 20 appearances this season, scoring four goals. While those stats may not leap off the page, his work rate, movement, and potential have caught the eye of top-flight clubs.
If Pirates succeed in securing his signature, Mbuthuma could find himself stepping into one of South Africa’s biggest football stages. Leaving Chiefs to look elsewhere for other options.
