Havoc erupts in the Lekwa-Teemane Local Municipality in Bloemhof, North West province. Flooding in areas close to the Vaal River has negatively impacted about 130 households.
Seven sluice gates at the Bloemhof Dam and 10 at the Vaal Dam were opened last Friday, 25 April. However, according to the Water and Sanitation Department, two sluice gates at the Vaal Dam will gradually close by this afternoon, 30 April.
The Lekwa-Teemana Local Municipality informed its residents and all drivers that the overflowing Vaal River is flooding. It has partially flooded a portion of the N12 between Bloemhof and Christiana, next to the Bloemhof Golf Course.
Drivers are seriously at risk from this development, especially at night or in low visibility. Traffic officials are keeping a careful eye on the situation. Additionally, warning signs have been constructed in the impacted area as a precaution.
Affected residents offered assistance
According to Albert Nel, a community representative in charge of a humanitarian aid program in Bloemhof and Christiana, many people in the community need help.
Speaking to SABC News, Nel says, “The community has gathered to address a significant need for food. They have created an account for payment and provide one daily meal to those in need.”
In addition, the Sanlam Foundation has also donated hampers. An additional hundred bags of maise meal for these individuals have also been donated.

Residents living near the Vaal River are advised to exercise extreme caution due to severe flooding in the area. Rising water levels have disrupted daily life and pose a significant risk to those in close proximity.
