Police say experts are trying to establish if vehicle parts found in the Hennops River are linked to the VW polo that the three deceased police officers were travelling in.
This, after the bodies of Constable Keamogetswe Buys, Constable Boipelo Senoge, and Constable
Cebekhulu Linda were retrieved in the river in Centurion on Tuesday, 1 May and their families positively identified them.
VEHICLE PARTS POSSIBLY LINKED TO THREE POLICE OFFICERS FOUND
South African Police Service (SAPS) national spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed that vehicle parts including a front and rear vehicle bumper have been found by the search and rescue teams working on this operation.
Mathe said the three families of the deceased officers have been notified of this latest development.
“Experts are trying to establish if these vehicle parts are linked to the VW polo that the three police officers were travelling in. A police reflector jacket belonging to one of the deceased police officers has also been found.
“SAPS divers, City of Tshwane divers and EMS, SAPS Special Task Force (STF) divers, Search and Rescue South Africa, have located a metal object that they suspect may be the missing vehicle. This metal object was felt by divers 4km from the N1. There is no confirmation as yet that this metal object is covered by debris,” Mathe said.
POLICE COMMISSIONER PROVIDES DETAILS
On Tuesday, SAPS national commissioner Fannie Masemola confirmed the death of the three police officers whose bodies were found, together with two other bodies, one being an admin clerk that is attached to the Lyttleton police station.
Masemola said on Monday, their investigation and search led them to the Hennops River in Centurion, where they found the first two bodies, including that of the admin clerk. The other three bodies were discovered on Tuesday.
“We don’t want to speculate at this stage what led to the discovery of these bodies in this river, whether it was an accident or not, our investigation will reveal those aspects once we find their vehicle.
“We want to thank the families and the task team involved in the search for working tirelessly to ensure a breakthrough in this case,” Masemola said.
