BOMBSHELL: Kagiso Rabada banned after failing recreational drug test

South African fast bowler Kagiso Rabada has confirmed that he tested positive for a recreational drug during the SA20 tournament earlier this year and is serving a provisional suspension, which led to his unexpected withdrawal from the IPL 2025 in early April.

At the time, Rabada’s franchise, the Gujarat Titans, cited a “significant personal matter” as the reason for his departure on April 3, offering no details about a potential return.

‘Expressed his remorse’

Now, in a public statement issued via the South African Cricketers’ Association (SACA), Rabada has come forward to explain the circumstances and express his remorse.

“I am deeply sorry to all those that I have let down,” Rabada said.

“I will never take the privilege of playing cricket for granted… This privilege is much larger than me.”

The transgression reportedly took place during the SA20 tournament, where Rabada played for MI Cape Town.

While the specific duration of his suspension has not been confirmed, reports are that his return to cricket is imminent, and there is no concern within Cricket South Africa (CSA) over his availability for the World Test Championship Final against Australia in June.

Kagiso Rabada thanked his agent, CSA, SACA, legal team, and especially his family and friends for supporting him through the embarrassing saga.

“This moment will not define me,” he added.

“I will keep doing what I have always done – working hard and playing with passion.”

The South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS), a WADA-aligned agency, is expected to release a detailed statement next week.

Rabada has taken 327 wickets at an average of 22 from 70 Tests while he has amassed a further 168 dismissals in 108 ODIs and 71 wickets in 65 T20 internationals.
