‘End of the road for Sundowns in Champions League’ – ex-Chiefs winger

Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Junior Khanye has predicted Mamelodi Sundowns to lose against Al Ahly in the CAF Champions League semi-final.

The two teams played each other this past weekend at the Loftus Versfeld in the first leg of the semi-final. Masandawana were lucky to escape with a draw after Al Ahly hit the post and had one goal ruled offside.

After the match, former Chiefs star felt Sundowns stood no chance against the Red Devils in Cairo.

“I have said it before they [Sundowns] are not going to win the Champions League,” said Khanye on iDiski TV.

“This is the end of the road. They are going away and the team they are playing against is a different team. The Ahly that played in the group stage and this one are two different. Technically they are something else. You look at number11 [Nejc Gradisar] he has something special but can’t compare to number 22 [Emam Abdelghany] because 22 is something else.

Sundowns need to beat Al Ahly away in the Champions League

“In front of his home crowd, I’m sure the coach though he will be cautious he will give him freedom to play and he’s going to want him to score. They are going to beat Sundowns away.”

Masandawana need to win or force a goalscoring draw to reach only their second final. In Cairo, the odds are stacked against Miguel Cardoso’s men, who are desperate to end their semi-final curse. Sundowns have never reached the Champions League final since winning the competition in 2016.

Can Sundowns beat Al Ahly or is their CAF dream over?
