These five beautiful churches in South Africa are some of the prettiest and most historic attractions in their respective towns and cities. What’s more, they’re free to visit! And, with the Easter weekend coming up, now’s a good time to celebrate the lovely designs of these historic buildings.
1. St George’s Cathedral, Cape Town
Designed by famous architect Sir Herbert Baker, St George’s dates from 1834. It is renowned for its intricate stained glass windows. This is also a very historic church in South Africa, thanks to its role in the anti-Apartheid movement.
This beautiful South African church also boasts a jazz restaurant in the underground crypt and a labyrinth outside.

2. St Michael and St George Cathedral, Makhanda
People often call Makhanda the “City of Saints”, thanks to its many churches. The Grahamstown Cathedral, as the St Michael and St George Cathedral is sometimes known, was founded in 1824. The current church opened in 1952 and features the tallest spire in South Africa at just over 53 metres.

4. Belvidere Church, Knysna, South Africa
A teeny-tiny but oh-so-cute building, Belvidere Church holds only 20 people at a time! The Duthie family built this little church for their small community in the 1850s, and it is open to the public.
The building features thick sandstone walls and stained glass. Furthermore, the current bell was once accidentally dropped in the Knysna lagoon and lost for some months before it was recovered!

5. Dutch Reformed Church, Franschhoek
Standing proudly at the end of Franschhoek Main Road, this Dutch Reformed Church is a pretty sight. With its whitewashed walls and low roof, its design has an element of Cape Dutch architecture. This is one of South Africa’s most beautiful churches, so make time to visit on your next trip to Franschhoek.
