Four Gauteng areas to face 10-hour power outage on Wednesday

Eskom has announced a planned power outage in Etwatwa, Gauteng, due to essential maintenance work on the distribution network. The outage will occur on Wednesday, 30 April, from 8:00 to 18:00. Areas affected include Etwatwa Extensions 23, 31, 32, and Barcelona.

“The interruption in electricity supply is necessary to perform essential maintenance on our distribution power lines,” Eskom said in a notice.

Residents are urged to treat all electrical appliances as live during the outage for safety reasons. Eskom has apologised for any inconvenience and expressed gratitude for the public’s cooperation.

The utility also issued a disclaimer, warning that unforeseen circumstances could delay or cancel the planned maintenance.

Eskom Appeal for Responsible Electricity Use

While load shedding remains suspended, Eskom cautioned that rising electricity demand could still pose risks.

“Eskom urges the public to help prevent transformer overloads and related equipment failures, which can result in explosions and prolonged outages,” the utility stated.

They emphasised the importance of avoiding illegal connections and encouraged customers to purchase electricity only from Eskom-accredited vendors. Regularising electricity usage remains a key focus to protect infrastructure and ensure reliable supply.

With the winter chill setting in, Eskom further requested the public’s cooperation: “Eskom requests the public to continue to use electricity efficiently.”

Support for Households and Crime Prevention Efforts

Eskom also reminded eligible households to register for free basic electricity through their local municipalities. The move aims to assist low-income households and promote legal and safe electricity access.

Additionally, the public is encouraged to report any illegal activity impacting Eskom’s infrastructure. Reports can be made anonymously by calling the Eskom Crime Line at ‪0800 112 722‬ or sending a WhatsApp message to ‪081 333 3323‬.
