How cats mark their territories
When cats rub their faces on objects, furniture, or even people, they’re not just being affectionate, they’re marking their territory using scent glands located around their cheeks, chin, and forehead. These glands release pheromones, which are chemical signals that convey messages to other cats.
By spreading their scent, cats create a familiar and comforting environment that helps them feel secure. This behavior also communicates ownership and helps establish boundaries without confrontation. So, when your cat headbutts you or rubs against your legs, it’s partly a sweet gesture—and partly their way of saying, “You’re mine!”
