Inside Gogo Skhotheni’s 33rd birthday celebration

Tumi Motsoeneng, popularly known as Gogo Skhotheni, celebrated her 33rd birthday with a powerful and deeply symbolic transformation—she was baptised.

The reality TV star marked her birthday on Monday, 5 May, with a glamorous celebration at Pere House in Kyalami.

Close friends and family attended the black-themed celebration, with a touch of white. But beyond the glitz and glam, the day was also about her rebirth in Christ.

Her baptism was conducted on Monday morning by Son of John, also known as John Kgabi. Following that, he led the ceremony and Holy Communion that welcomed her into the Kingdom of God.

‘THE BURDEN HAS BEEN LIFTED’ – TUMI ON HER SPIRITUAL REBIRTH

Many South Africans have closely followed Tumi’s spiritual journey, and her recent step marks a turning point.

She first announced her decision to leave her calling as a sangoma on 3 April 2025 through social media. Since then, her followers have been eager to understand her transformation.

Speaking exclusively to The South African at her birthday celebration, she shared:

“I was scared, but the comfort and warmth I got from finally saying yes to my spiritual rebirth made me feel like there was a burden that had been taken off my shoulders. I am excited, and I don’t think anyone would understand it until they go through it.”

On being judged by others for leaving her traditional calling, she said:

“I don’t think I am in a position of being judgmental because I understand my journey. I will pray for those who judge me.”

‘I’M NOT DOING THIS FOR CLOUT’ – GOGO SKHOTHENI ON HER DECISION

Tumi also opened up about a scripture that resonates deeply with her—John 3:5—and how it mirrors her own life experiences:

“It talks about when you finally accept God as your Lord and Saviour, you need to go through a certain procedure of your baptism, same as I did when I was initiated to be a sangoma. Hence, I am excited that this verse collaborates with my promise to God. I am sharing it to the world, not for clout but to tell people, don’t be scared to do what God wants you to do.”

When asked if the passing of her son, Monde Jnr, played a role in her decision, she clarified:

“No, people around me—they will tell you that I’ve been saying this for the past five years, but I needed to understand it to be sure. Announcing it today doesn’t mean it happened overnight—it took me years to understand what God had been saying all along.”
