Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates look set to battle it out for a coveted Bafana Bafana star. Here’s the latest.
Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates chase Bafana star Basadien
28-year-old Fawaaz Basadien is one of the steadiest full-backs in South Africa. No wonder two of the big three clubs are taking a closer look.
“Chiefs interest was serious, but there was no agreement reached between the two clubs, and now it looks like Pirates are coming in strong for him. Don’t be surprised to see him join them when the season ends, but you never know in football because things change very quickly, and other clubs might come knocking as well,” a Citizen source added.
Blom to leave Kaizer Chiefs?
25-year-old midfielder Njabulo Blom was expected to make a big splash in 2024-2025. However, his return to the club on loan from the USA has been underwhelming. Nasreddine Nabi has mostly used him as a substitute and often out of position at right back.
“He was expected to lead the team with his experience and understanding of the environment,” a source told FARPost. “However, Blom has disappointed since his return from the MLS, struggling to knuckle down a starting place in Xoach Nabi’s team.”

Why is Basadien in demand?
Left-back has been a problem position for Jose Riveiro. Although Deon Hotto is a super-dependable fan favourite, he’s not getting younger. Also, left full-back isn’t his preferred role. Stellies’ Fawaaz Basadien has made 36 appearances across all competitions. 19 of those have been in the league, with three goals and three assists. Former Chiefs youngster Omega Mdaka, still only 21, has also been heavily involved with 14 appearances across all competitions. If Stellies feel that Basadien wants to leave, they already have a replacement lined up, and he’s in their first XI already. Pirates could take advantage of the player’s apparent desire to move to Soweto.
