Amakhosi are turning up the heat in their search for a proven goal machine and this time, they’re eyeing a familiar face. After being linked to several potential frontmen, the Soweto giants are once again showing strong interest in South African forward Fagrie Lakay.
Chiefs plan to sign more than one striker in the upcoming transfer window, according to sources close to the club. While Fiston Mayele remains their top target, the club isn’t putting all its eggs in one basket.
“At the moment there is not one striker who the club could say is the one joining them. Yes, they are prioritising Fiston Mayele but they don’t want to be caught off guard if things don’t work out with him and that’s why they are reigniting the interest in Lakay.”
Chiefs rekindle interest in Lakay after two-year watch
Chiefs have had Lakay on their radar for the past two seasons. Now, as the team reassesses its striking options, the timing could finally be right. The club appears ready to act if negotiations with their first-choice option stall.
A well-placed insider confirmed, “They are just waiting for that chance to sign him. And this could be the right time to do so for the club.”
Pyramids hold the cards as targets share employer
Both Lakay and Mayele are under contract with Pyramids FC, adding complexity to the Chiefs’ pursuit. Chiefs must now navigate a challenging negotiation process with the Egyptian club, which could dictate which striker becomes available.
“It could go down to choice and priority for both Chiefs and Pyramids… It is expected to go down to the wire as they are interested in two strikers of the same team.”
Pyramids FC may need to make a decision on which player to offload—while Chiefs must weigh pricing and player availability before finalizing their approach.
Lakay shines on loan but Chiefs must move fast
Currently on loan at Ceramica Cleopatra FC, Lakay has enjoyed consistent game time this season. His form keeps him in the spotlight, and Chiefs will need to act quickly if they hope to beat the competition, especially as negotiations for Mayele continue.
Lakay scored four goals and delivered five assists in 23 appearances across all competitions this season. With Chiefs’ attack in desperate need of firepower, locking in Lakay could prove a smart and strategic move, especially if Mayele’s price tag climbs too high.
