DURBAN: One person has died, leaving several others injured after a heavy rain collapsed a house in Umlazi P section on Friday, 25 April 2025.

The heavy rain collapsed a house in Umlazi P section, claiming one life and injuring several others who were rushed to the nearest clinics and hospital.
Other sections impacted in Umlazi are Chicago in AA Section, J Section, and Ward 78 near KwaMgaga High School, reported IOL.
The MEC for Transport and Human Settlements in KZN, Siboniso Amstrong Duma, announced that he would visit families affected by the flooding to offer condolences.
Duma said, “Following heavy rains that wreaked havoc in Durban this morning, I have decided to wrap up my engagement in the legislature and be with distressed communities.”
On Friday, he told the KZN Legislature that the Department would invest over R13 billion in flood-resistant building materials for road infrastructure.
“There is a need for better disaster preparedness and climate resilience. As a department, we must invest in flood-resistant materials and innovative methods to build structures to withstand he weather, such as floating bridges to adapt to rising water levels,” he said.
DURBAN MOTOSRISTS WARNED OF SUBMERGED MANHOLES CAUSED BY FLOODS
Durban motorists are urged to be cautious of submerged manholes that were caused by floods, reported East Coast Radio.
Andrea Mathios, a Marshall Security official, said that his team has been keeping a close eye on routes in Durban.
“We’ve also got the rising rivers in the Avoca area and it’s starting to rise, and I think it probably will reach a peak in the next two or three hours, as it starts to subside. But the traffic out there is absolutely chaotic,” he said.
He added that there is still a lot of work that needs to be done to clear the damage caused by the heavy rain.
Mathios said, “ You can actually see that the stormwater drains are completely blocked, and this is an issue that needs to be addressed because if we don’t stop clearing these stormwater drains, we are going to keep having these problems. They’re going to keep repeating themselves. The M19 was an absolute nightmare this morning.”
