Major changes to swimming programme at 2028 Los Angeles Olympics

The 2028 Los Angeles Olympics just got a whole lot speedier in the pool.

With the confirmation of the event programme and athlete quotas for the coming Summer Games, swimming will see each of the 50m breaststroke, butterfly, and backstroke added to its calendar.

The news came after the approval by the Executive Board (EB) of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), announced on Wednesday, 9 April.

That brings the total medal events in swimming to 41 – up from 35 at Paris 2024.

The 50m freestyle for men and women is already part of the Olympic programme.

‘Good feeling’

The news brought a near immediate response from three-time Olympic champion swimmer Adam Peaty, who claimed gold in the 100m breaststroke at Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 in 2021.

“This is the best result for our incredible sport and will allow more people to be part of it and stay in it much longer,” the British star wrote on Instagram.

“I’ve got a good feeling about these next three years.”

Peaty won silver in the 100m breaststroke in Paris.
