Mamelodi Sundowns’ key member leaves the club after a trophy-laden spell.
Masandawana have parted ways with their long-serving analyst and scout Duan Baker after his contract came to an end. Baker leaves the African giants after four fruitful years, during which he played a pivotal role in their domestic and continental dominance.
The accomplished scout joined Sundowns from Ajax Cape Town and quickly became instrumental in the club’s success. Baker helped the club secure nine major trophies, including the CAF Women’s Champions League with the Sundowns Ladies and four Betway Premiership titles with the men’s team.

Baker took to social media to confirm his departure and expressed gratitude to the Sundowns leadership:
“Thank you to the Sundowns board for giving me the opportunity to be part of the history makers at the club.”
His exit has stunned many fans, especially given his reputation for unearthing raw talent from grassroots football—a quality that made him an integral figure at Chloorkop.
Cape Town City lead the race to land Baker
Baker may not be without a job for long. Sources close to the matter reveal that Cape Town City are already pursuing the highly respected scout. Baker previously worked with City owner John Comitis during his time at Ajax Cape Town, making a reunion highly possible.
In addition, incoming Cape Town City coach Andries Ulderink, currently with Royal Antwerp FC in Belgium, also shares a history with Baker. The pair collaborated at Ajax and could be poised for a reunion at City.
Competition: Sekhukhune’s Mali also on City’s radar
While Baker remains the front-runner, Cape Town City are reportedly keeping their options open. The club has also been linked with Sekhukhune United’s analyst and scout Sinesipho Mali, signaling an aggressive intent to bolster their backroom team ahead of the new season.
With multiple Premier Soccer League (PSL) clubs circling, it’s only a matter of time before Duan Baker lands his next role. His sharp eye for talent and proven track record make him one of the most coveted scouts in South African football right now.
