Manqoba Mngqithi’s ultra-rare R1.7m watch steals the spotlight

With an illustrious career spanning years, Golden Arrows coach Manqoba Mngqithi has fast become one of the most sought-after South African coaches.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns gaffer has wowed many with his style of play and often makes headlines with his moments of brilliance in devising game plans.

MANQOBA MNGQITHI’S R1.7 MILLION WATCH STEALS THE SPOTLIGHT

Over the weekend, Mngqithi edged Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 in an epic encounter at Moses Mabhidha Stadium.

The win saw Golden Arrows jump to 10th on the 16-team league table with 27 points from 20 matches, while Chiefs remained eighth with 29 points from 23 games.

However, the Golden Arrows gaffer’s post-match interview has since thrust him into the top trends. He lauded his lads’ performance against the Soweto giants.

However, his expensive wristwatch, which he was spotted wearing during the press conference, stole the media’s attention.

He wore Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, one of the most coveted watches in the world. The watch is priced at around $95 215, around R1.75 million.

The now-viral photos have undoubtedly seen the gaffer joining a host of celebrated athletes spotted with the priceless watch.

NBA star Steph Curry has a soft spot for the watch brand and is often spotted wearing a classic-looking gold version of the Royal Oak.

Rapper Travis Scott has also made headlines with his AP Royal Oak, which features a frosted gold finish and has even collaborated with the brand.

After all, the watch has since implicated Manqoba Mngqithi’s salary. The former Mamelodi Sundowns star has been rumoured to be one of the highest-paid coaches in South Africa.

Rumour has it that Mnqqithi reportedly earned close to R700 000 monthly during his time with Sundowns.

With such salary packages, Mngqithi can afford to wear an expensive wristwatch-like an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak.

CAREER

Manqoba Mngqithi has earned a fortune from his illustrious career that spans over a decade. He began his coaching career in 2006 with Golden Arrows.

Since then, he has won big and coached several clubs in the Betway Premiership. He joined AmaZulu in 2011 but left after a brief stint due to personal reasons.

He coached Chippa United for a season before departing in 2013— Mamelodi Sundowns was one of Mngqithi’s biggest stints as a coach.

The football gaffer was the assistant manager and later became the co-head coach alongside Rhulani Mokwena.

He was appointed as the head coach in 2020 but was later shifted to the position of senior coach.

However, his reign was not as colourful as many had hoped, leaving to his exit. He later joined Golden Arrows for another dance.
