Orlando Pirates fans have some wild dreams, and a few of those involve the great Benni McCarthy. Could he manage them one day?
Benni McCarthy has to be a candidate to coach Orlando Pirates
Readers on The South African are intrigued as to who might take the Orlando Pirates managerial job once Jose Riveiro leaves. We’ve seen a growing clamour for Benni McCarthy as well as Dan Malesela.
What are Benni’s credentials?
Benni started his journey at Sint-Truiden, where he was the Belgian club’s assistant coach from 2015 to 2016. He then presided over 89 matches at Cape Town City as their head coach, winning the MTN9 in 2018-2019. His next head coach role was with AmaZulu, a club he guided to the Caf Champions League for the first time in their history. All of those roles preceded arguably his most glamorous position to date: first-team attacking coach at Manchester United. With the 2023-2024 FA Cup now in his cabinet, Benni’s tasted success in the dugout on two occasions and will want more of that feeling. Mr McCarthy is now the head coach of Kenya’s Harambee Stars.
Mofokeng is irreplaceable at Orlando Pirates
Meanwhile, Relebohile Mofokeng is linked with top European clubs on a daily basis. We’ve dug deeper to look at his growing influence on the Orlando Pirates cause. Although Pirates could earn huge money by winning the Champions League, can he be replaced?
Crunch Champions League action awaits
The eventual winners of this season’s Caf Champions League will take home $4 million (R75 million). That number has grown from $2.5 million in 2022. Orlando Pirates must negotiate a tough second-leg semi-final clash in Egypt against Pyramids after a hard-fought 0-0 draw in the first leg. If they advance to the final, either Mamelodi Sundowns or defending champions Al Ahly await them in another two-legged affair to crown the continent’s finest side. Sundowns meet Al Ahly on Friday, 25 April at 18:00 after a goalless first leg. Pyramids vs Pirates kicks off at 20:00 on the same day. What a feast of football.
Would you like Benni to take the reins, Pirates fans?
