Orlando Pirates lock in a key defender amid left-back problems.
The Bucs are moving fast to lock down left-back Paseka Mako with a new contract, as the club braces for possible shake ups in its defensive lineup. With his current deal set to expire at the end of the season, Pirates are pushing to finalise a two-year extension for the experienced defender.
Mako becomes the pillar of defensive stability
At 31, Mako’s value to the squad has skyrocketed, especially amid growing doubts about captain Innocent Maela’s future. The club views Mako as a dependable force on the left flank. Which is crucial to maintaining balance and experience in the backline.
“For now he is the only left back who can be there next season as the future of captain Innocent Maela hangs in the balance. So that is why they have decided to keep him for a further two seasons,” a source told this publication.
Since joining Pirates from Chippa United in 2018, Mako has quietly cemented his role as a defensive mainstay. He’s made 14 Betway Premiership appearances this season and chipped in with an assist. Which proves his worth as a reliable squad member.
Basadien hunt heats up: But Pirates play it safe
While the Buccaneers still have their eyes on Fawaaz Basadien from Stellenbosch FC, the battle for his signature is fierce, and uncertain. Stellenbosch shows no intention of releasing the Bafana Bafana star, and arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs are also in hot pursuit.
“The club is still fighting to get a left back like Basadien. But they know it won’t be easy as Stellenbosch doesn’t want to let him go while Kaizer Chiefs are also interested in him. So, to be safe that’s why they are believed to be keeping Mako longer,” the source added.
Pirates are clearly strategizing to avoid a defensive gap next season. By ensuring at least one seasoned left-back remains in their ranks, even as the transfer window drama unfolds.
