Orlando Pirates are on the verge of a major defensive shake-up, with sources confirming that the Soweto giants are in advanced negotiations to sign rising star Vuyo Letlapa. The potential deal comes as the club looks to reinforce a vulnerable left-back position ahead of the new season.
With club captain Innocent Maela possibly transitioning to a new role, and limited depth behind Paseka Mako and young prospect Yanga Madiba, the Buccaneers are racing against time to secure a proven talent. A high-ranking source close to the club revealed that Letlapa tops their list.
Letlapa transfer talks heating up as Chiefs circle
The Pirates have been closely monitoring the Sekhukhune United left-back, who has also caught the eye of rivals Kaizer Chiefs. Letlapa, who joined Sekhukhune from Jomo Cosmos this season, has become a mainstay in their defense and is even attracting interest from Europe.
“The Letlapa transfer won’t be as straightforward as you may think because the boy just joined Sekhukhune, and they are also an ambitious club,” a source explained. “Bringing in Eric Tinkler shows that they are serious… They will think twice unless the money is too good and they have a replacement ready.”
Why Pirates are pushing hard for Letlapa
While Pirates have also looked at Stellenbosch FC duo Fawaaz Basadien and Omega Mdaka, those negotiations appear more complicated. That’s why talks for Letlapa have become the club’s primary focus.
“They are believed to be intensifying talks for the Vuyo Letlapa possibility as things stand. Talks are believed to be at an advanced stage and looking good,” the insider confirmed.
Future-proofing with Madiba
Although Madiba remains a promising talent, Pirates know they need experienced reinforcement. The club has moved swiftly to secure Madiba for the long term as part of a broader contingency plan.
“Apart from it being a short-term solution, they are looking at Yanga (Madiba) as one for the future. But they are still looking at the possibilities of getting one of the three on the radar. Yes, there is always competition but things have their own way of working out,” the source said.
With transfer talks in full swing and European clubs also lurking, the race for Letlapa’s signature is heating up. Orlando Pirates are clearly positioning themselves for a bold move that could define their backline for seasons to come.
