Pitso Mosimane finally addresses Orlando Pirates coach rumours

Pitso Mosimane finally addresses Orlando Pirates head coach rumours.

The South African coaching icon has dismissed the latest speculation linking him with a move to Orlando Pirates, saying he hasn’t received any contact from the Soweto giants.

With Jose Riveiro officially leaving Pirates at the end of the season, rumours have kicked into high gear, naming Mosimane as a potential successor. But the former Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly coach isn’t buying into the hype.

“Nobody has spoken to me” – Pitso clears the air

In an exclusive with The Sowetan, Mosimane didn’t mince his words.

“I’ve seen it [speculation]. Nobody has spoken to me. So, we can’t be talking about nothing,” he said.

That’s a clear message from a coach who knows his worth and refuses to get dragged into unfounded reports.

“We will see. At the moment this badge means a lot to me, more than any other badge,” he added, referencing his youth football project.

Still coaching, just not in the PSL (yet)

While Mosimane has been without a top-tier club since leaving Iranian side Esteghlal FC due to a salary dispute—now in the hands of FIFA—he insists he’s far from idle.

Back home in Mzansi, he’s been hard at work on the Pitso Mosimane Youth Football Project, nurturing the next generation of talent and laying the foundation for long-term impact.

“I’m home, yes, but it depends. It must be the right project, it must be the right time,” Mosimane responded when asked about returning to the PSL.

“Let me build this legacy, because once I stop coaching people will forget about the trophies.”

On the pitch, just not where you expect

Far from stepping away from the beautiful game, Pitso remains hands-on, literally.

“Look how busy I am, today I’m here, [and] I’m going to another school. I was launching one in Rustenburg three days back, I’m so busy, it’s not funny,” he said.

“I’m not even seeing the vacancy of not being on the pitch. I’m on the pitch with the coaches, I’m watching them, are they doing the right thing.”

For Pitso, coaching has just taken on a different shape—one that’s more developmental, community-driven, and legacy-focused.

“It’s hectic. I’m every day at the office, I’m every day at the pitches, every day at the schools, every day at the government offices, so I can’t ask for more. I’m blessed, thank you.”

What’s next for Pitso Mosimane?

While a Pirates move seems unlikely, at least for now, Mosimane hasn’t ruled out a return to professional coaching altogether. But it’ll have to be the right fit, at the right time.

Until then, South Africa’s most successful coaching export continues to invest in the country’s footballing future, one youngster at a time.
