PSL has released the latest, with three teams set for promotion as Royal AM is kicked out.
In a dramatic shake-up of South African football, the Premier Soccer League (PSL) will request that the South African Football Association (SAFA) promote three teams from the ABC Motsepe League this season, SABC Sport reports.
This game-changing move follows the explosive termination of Royal AM’s membership, a bold decision that shocked the football world earlier this month. Now, the league looks to fill the gap left behind without expanding the top-flight to 18 clubs.
PSL board moves swiftly to resolve Royal AM fallout
The PSL’s Board of Governors met again on Thursday to officially finalize the Royal AM saga. The board reaffirmed its previous vote to expel Royal AM from the professional ranks, an action that was backed by an overwhelming majority.
As a result, the Betway Premiership will continue with 16 teams, and Royal AM’s results have been formally expunged. “Any points for or against the club would be expunged,” a source confirmed, emphasizing the sweeping nature of the decision.
ABC Motsepe League gets its moment: 3 teams to step up
Rather than adjusting the number of clubs in the top flight. The PSL plans to plug the vacancy by promoting three clubs from the ABC Motsepe League, South Africa’s third division. Traditionally, only two teams earn promotion, but this season’s exception will restore balance across the divisions, assuming SAFA grants approval.
“The PSL will request that SAFA essentially replace Thwihli Thwahla. By promoting three instead of two teams from the ABC Motsepe League this time around,” SABC Sport revealed.
Motsepe Foundation Championship also feels the impact
Royal AM’s dismissal also had ripple effects in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, South Africa’s second-tier competition. With one team now missing from the professional system. The PSL needs to promote an additional club from the amateur ranks to maintain the league’s structure.
The PSL will officially update the Betway Premiership log, reducing the number of games played by each club to 28. This adjustment confirms the expunging of all points earned against or lost to Royal AM throughout the season.
With the 2024/2025 season nearing its conclusion, the focus now shifts to the ABC Motsepe League playoffs. And the dream of promotion is now alive for three ambitious clubs, not just two.
