Charl Schwartzel, the 2011 champion, signed for a 2-over par 74 and lies in a tie for 51st.
Christiaan Bezuidenhout could do no better than a 4-over par 76 and finds himself in a tie for 73rd after his opening 18 holes.
Finally, Thirston Lawrence struggled to a 7-over par 79 and sits tied for 90th in the 95-player field.
Second round
Lawrence will tee off at 14:02 (SA time) in his second round, followed shortly thereafter by Bezuidenhout at 14:24 and Schwartzel at 14:35.
The top 50 and ties as well as all golfers within 10 shots of the 36-hole leader will make the halfway cut.
After Round 1, Johannesburg-born Justin Rose leads the way on 7-under par, having signed for a superb 65 on Thursday.
Rose leads by three shots from Sweden’s Ludvig Åberg, Canada’s Corey Conners and world No 1 American Scottie Scheffler.
