The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) has temporarily suspended the transition from SASSA gold cards to Postbank’s new black cards. The suspension comes amid concerns over Postbank’s compliance with banking security standards, limited infrastructure, and inadequate communication with grant recipients.
Why is the transition suspended?
SARB suspended the transition due to Postbank’s failure to meet security standards, insufficient banking infrastructure, and inadequate communication with beneficiaries.
SASSA maintains that old cards will remain functional until the Reserve Bank announces a new deadline.
Sassa beneficiaries confused
In the Northern Cape province, some recipients of social grants are still confused about the transition procedure.
Speaking to SABC News, Matshidisonyana Seleke, a pensioner from Kimberly, says, “I am very confused. Hence, I have not changed my card.”
Seleke is among thousands of SASSA’s beneficiaries left confused, and the agency’s spokesperson clarifies this confusion.
SASSA’s Northern Cape Spokesperson Lungelo Mkamba says, “Until a new deadline for the termination of old SASSA gold cards is issued, all gold cards remain functional.
According to IOL, the Portfolio Committee on Social Development urges SASSA gold card beneficiaries who could not migrate to the Postbank black card to apply to a bank of their choice to receive social grants.
Sum up
The Reserve Bank has instructed Postbank, under the oversight of SASSA, to ensure all beneficiaries can continue using their gold cards until further notice.
