A 35-year-old security officer tragically passed away in a workplace accident at Livingstone Hospital in Gqeberha earlier this morning, 23 April 2025. The incident occurred at around 4:20 while the security officer was performing her duties.
HOW DID THE ACCIDENT HAPPEN?
It is alleged that the woman was attempting to open Gate 3. The gate came off its tracks and fell on her. Co-workers immediately rushed the woman to the hospital’s emergency ward for treatment. But despite their efforts to save her, she succumbed to her injuries.
SAPS Gelvandale in Gqeberha opened an inquest to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragic accident, police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg told The South African.
Police have informed the deceased security officer’s family, but have not yet released her identity.
LIVINGSTONE HOSPITAL SECURITY
Livingstone Hospital in Gqeberha has been in the news recently due to a series of concerning events. On Sunday, 16 March 2025, three security officers were robbed at gunpoint at the hospital’s gate guardhouse at around 12:35 AM, while they were stationed at the Stanford Road entrance.
Adding to the growing concerns, three of the six mentally ill patients escaped from the hospital on Tuesday, 1 April. The escape occurred during a protest by security officers over unpaid salaries, which resulted in a lapse in supervision.
