Soweto derby: Excitement builds ahead of kick-off

The atmosphere is electric as Kaizer Chiefs fans rally behind their team in the lead-up to the much-anticipated Soweto derby against Orlando Pirates at the FNB Stadium on Saturday, 3 May.

In the build-up to the clash, Kaizer Chiefs hosted lively fan activations at the Kaizer Chiefs Village and Evaton Mall, drawing crowds of supporters eager to show their loyalty.

At the Village, fans collected new branch flags and enjoyed a live broadcast from Kaizer Chiefs Radio, while winners of the Kappa competition were honoured on site.

The excitement intensified with the presence of club legends Stanton Fredericks and Siphiwe Tshabalala, who mingled with fans and offered words of motivation.

“Mental strength is key in a game like the Soweto derby,” Tshabalala said.

“This one can also inspire us more ahead of the Nedbank Cup match against the same rivals a week later.”

Fierce clash

At Evaton Mall, fans were treated to entertainment and competitions, winning match-day tickets, Vodacom prizes, and club merchandise – a thrilling prelude to what promises to be a fierce clash.

Match-day festivities will begin at 12:00, including a tour of the Chiefs Village and a pre-match concert at the stadium to pump up the crowd ahead of kick-off.

Organisers have urged fans to arrive early and follow safety protocols to ensure a smooth and secure experience.

Key tips include:

  • Travel in groups and avoid isolated areas
  • Secure personal belongings
  • Drink responsibly and avoid drinking and driving
  • No weapons allowed inside the stadium
  • No smoking in the stands

With the match officially sold out, only ticketholders will be allowed into the stadium precinct.

Authorities have announced road closures around the venue, including:

  • Nasrec & Shaft 17
  • Nasrec & Randshow Roads
  • Stadium Avenue & Soccer City Road
  • League Road & Booysens Reserve Road
  • Soweto Highway off-ramps

Fans are urged to respect these restrictions and avoid the stadium area without valid entry.

As anticipation builds, all eyes turn to this weekend’s derby, where township pride and PSL bragging rights are at stake – and the stage is set for a memorable showdown in South African football.
