Springboks head coach Rassie Erasmus is hands down the most unpredictable coach in World Rugby.
Springboks, Siya Kolisi, Willie Le Roux and Lukhanyo Am have all been utilised in new positions recently.
This makes for interesting reading with Kolisi flourishing in his new role. Meanwhile, Bok Le Roux and Am have shown hot and cold with new numbers on their backs.
SPRINGBOKS CAPTAIN FLOURISHING IN NEW POSITION
Springboks captain Siya Kolisi has been utilised at eightgthman for the Sharks for several months under coach John Plumtree. What started out experimental has now turned into a new norm after a successful experiment, turned stroke of genius, from the New Zealand-born Sharks coach.
Kolisi has flourished at the back of the scrum. Moreover, the Bok skipper has enjoyed having more space to play his natural open running rugby. So, could he be shifted to number 8 for the Boks?
Given recent events – Kolisi could play a fair bit at number 8 for the Boks this season. As mentioned, he has looked natural, flourishing in his new role. Furthermore, regular Bok first-choice number 8, Jasper Wiese has been ruled out for the remainder of the season. Meanwhile, Elrigh Louw has also been deemed the same unfortunate fate.
WILLIE GETS A RUN AT 10
Springboks great, Le Roux recently played flyhalf in a crucial URC match. Jake White named the agile x-factor Bulls star at flyhalf for their local derby against the Stormers in Cape Town.
Interestingly, he had a solid game at flyhalf, showcasing all the necessary skills needed from the modern- day ‘number 10’flyhalf. Knowing when to kick or attack, his running lines, his vision and composure made it seem like he’s a natural flyhalf. As a fullback, Le Roux is also an excellent defender so he has no problems being in the first line of defence. This presents an interesting prospect for Rassie with games against Georgia and Italy presenting the Boks with a chance to experiment.
AM SHIFTED FROM OUTSIDE TO INSIDE
Lukhanyo Am is another Bok that Plumtree has recently experimented with.
He has played a couple of games at inside centre rather than his usual position at outside centre. Now, given his ability to read opposition defensively it makes sense. However, he has not been at his best and has looked out of place at 12. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that Plumtree has switched him back to his regular position in recent matches.
WHICH OF THESE SPRINGBOKS SHOULD BE GIVEN A RUN IN THE GREEN AND GOLD IN THESE NEW POSITIONS THIS SEASON?
