Tshwane announces 8-hour power outage in parts of Pretoria: Here are the affected suburbs

An emergency shutdown of the 132kV Njala Line 1 has resulted in a massive power outage in the east of Pretoria on Thursday afternoon.

This action was taken to facilitate urgent maintenance work and to prevent further damage to the substation, according to the City of Tshwane. On Wednesday evening, Pretoria East plunged into darkness after the Njala station experienced a trip following a thunderstorm. Most areas were switched back on a few hours later.

In a statement, the City of Tshwane said Pretoria residents should prepare for a power outage until Thursday evening.

“This essential work includes repairs to the line isolators, which were affected by last night’s power failure.

“The shutdown, which was carried out at 13h today, will affect most parts of Pretoria East and some areas which are supplied by the substations linked to the Njala Line 1,” the city said.
