President Cyril Ramaphosa will host Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday, 24 April 2025, at the Union Buildings in Pretoria for an official visit.
Strengthening Diplomatic Ties
This historic visit follows Ramaphosa’s trip to Ukraine on 16 June 2023, as part of the Africa Peace Initiative.
The initiative aimed at fostering dialogue and contributing to global peace efforts.
This marks the first visit by a Ukrainian leader to South Africa, signalling a deepening of the bilateral relationship between the two countries.
Talks on Trade, Agriculture and Education
According to a statement issued by the Presidency on Wednesday, the two leaders will explore opportunities to collaborate on trade, agriculture and education.
The meeting is expected to include discussions on practical partnerships to boost development and mutual interests.
Peace Efforts Amid Global Conflict
The visit also forms part of South Africa’s ongoing diplomatic engagement to help bring about peace between Russia and Ukraine.
In a separate development, Ramaphosa held a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday, 21 April.
During the call, the two leaders discussed the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict and emphasised their shared interest in finding a peaceful resolution.
Ramaphosa highlighted the importance of maintaining strong diplomatic ties between South Africa and Russia.
“We both affirmed the strong bilateral relations between our countries and committed to working towards a peaceful resolution of the Russia-Ukraine conflict,” Ramaphosa said.
He added that South Africa would continue engaging all affected parties, including Ukraine, to support global peace efforts.
