‘We are told white people will leave and the economy will collapse’ – Julius Malema

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema once again addressed the land question, claiming that huge portions of land in the country were currently under white ownership.

Addressing mourners at the funeral service of the late Selaelo Winnie Mphahlele, the EFF leader said the party does not support the Expropriation Act in its current form.

He said one person should not ‘own 7000 hectares of land while the community is poor and squeezed on a tiny land’.

Julius Malema says poor people should have access to land

“How can the people of Cape Town allow themselves to stay in squalor and look at Stellenbosch with so much beautiful land owned by one individual? When we question that, we are told that white people will leave the country and the economy will collapse, and we will suffer.

“Are you guys not suffering currently? How is the current economy helpful? You are not part of the economy and even if it collapses, it won’t affect you because you are already poor. Those people look after themselves,” Malema said.

The EFF leader also touched on the proposed VAT increase, which was later reversed by Enoch Godongwana.

Julius Malema and EFF takes credit over VAT u-turn

“The ANC said they wanted to increase VAT by 2% and we said that won’t happen. We fought them in parliament, but they got away. But because these people are criminals, they came sneaking in and said, ‘We heard you and agree with you that 2% is too much, we’ll increase by 0.5% this year and then 0.5% the next year’. Effectively, they are saying we’ll increase by 1%.”

The proposed VAT increase saw parties like the EFF and Democratic Alliance (DA) applying to interdict it in court, before the minister reversed the increase earlier this week.

EFF leader Julius Malema said the VAT increase must be nullified through a motion in the legislature.

“They must go back to where it was passed and say they are taking a motion to withdraw the approval of the budget fiscal policy,” he said.

Did EFF have a the right to take all the credit for reversal of VAT increase?
