Peter de Villiers coached the Springboks from 2008 to 2011, and although he was not always everyone’s cup of tea while at the helm of the national side, the fact is that he always remained true to himself.
Under De Villiers’ leadership the national side won 30 of their 48 Tests, but an agonising defeat to Australia in the 2011 World Cup quarter-final saw his tenure come to an end in disappointing fashion.
After his coaching career concluded with the Springboks, he did have a brief spell coaching with Eastern Province Rugby and an unsuccessful period with Zimbabwe before taking up a brief stint as coach of the national deaf sevens team.
Where is ex-Springbok coach Peter de Villiers now?
In 2021, the 67-year-old officially made his first move into politics when he was announced as the Good Party’s candidate for mayor of the Drakenstein Local Municipality.
He resigned from council in June 2022, only to return in January 2023 again before being sworn in as a Good Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament in May 2023.
However, a major controversy followed as he was suspended from all party activities last year after receiving a complaint of sexual misconduct from another party member.
Police ultimately refused to specifically name De Villiers, and no arrests were made, although the Vredenburg Family Violence and Sexual Offences Unit were said to have investigated a case of sexual assault.
With no further action having been taken to date, it came to light at the start of this year that De Villiers had joined the Jacob Zuma-led uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party as he looks to reignite his political career.
