Why Benni McCarthy has the credentials to coach Orlando Pirates

Benni McCarthy ticks a whole lot of boxes as a prime candidate for the Orlando Pirates head coaching role.

What are Benni’s managerial credentials?

Benni McCarthy started his coaching journey at Sint-Truiden, where he was the Belgian club’s assistant manager from 2015 to 2016. He then presided over 89 matches at Cape Town City as their head coach, winning the MTN9 in 2018-2019. His next head coach role was with AmaZulu, a club he guided to the Caf Champions League for the first time in their history. All of those roles preceded arguably his most glamorous position to date: first-team attacking coach at Manchester United. With the 2023-2024 FA Cup now in his cabinet, Benni’s tasted success in the dugout on two occasions and will want more of that feeling. Mr McCarthy is now the head coach of Kenya’s Harambee Stars.

No second star for Orlando Pirates yet

On a dramatic night in Cairo, Orlando Pirates were defeated 3-2 in the second leg of the Champions League semifinals by Pyramids FC. They have already secured silverware this season in the form of the MTN8. However, Bucs supporters were desperate to rule the continent. They’re still in the Betway Premiership title race but must claw back a nine-point deficit, with two games in hand. There’s also a Nedbank Cup final on the horizon against Kaizer Chiefs. For now, however, continental heartbreak will be a bitter pill to swallow.

Would you like to see Benni manage Orlando Pirates one day?
